Our office, High Desert Dental, here in Albuquerque, New Mexico are highly trained in all dental procedures including that of wisdom teeth extractions. For most people, it is suggested that wisdom teeth or your third molars, be removed due to the complications that they could bring.
Why get Wisdom Teeth Extracted
Your wisdom teeth are different from all your other teeth. They are a third molar that won’t erupt until about teenage or young adult years, or sometimes they don’t erupt at all and stay compacted into the jaw bone.
Some of the reasons the wisdom teeth might be removed are:
- There isn’t enough room in your mouth for the wisdom teeth to grow in. Usually, if there isn’t enough room and they grow in teeth will move around and become crowded.
- If there is enough space for your wisdom teeth to grow in, they are more susceptible to accumulate decay and cavities because they are the hardest to clean.
- In some cases, a cyst can form, under the gums, which can damage roots and your jaw bone.
- Impacted wisdom teeth are stuck under the gums and haven’t had the opportunity to naturally develop. Not having enough space to grow in properly, impacted wisdom teeth tend to grow sideways.
To know if you need to get your wisdom teeth removed, it is commonly suggested that a panoramic x-ray is taken of your whole mouth. In this panoramic, the dentist can see if your wisdom teeth are impacted or if they are starting to go through the process to erupt.
If the dentist advises that you get them removed, your next step would be the extraction procedure. Because of sedation dentistry and anesthesia, we can complete the procedure by making sure the patient is comfortable.
